Formed in 2010, Liverpool’s The Cheap Thrills have gone from strength to strength, building up a loyal following in the process and their latest EP, ‘Glare’, is their most impressive to date.
EP opener ‘Tides’ is good enough to be single in its own right. Effortlessly combining a psychedelic sound with pop to create an atmospheric song that is as catchy as it is cool. An essential for any summer playlist.
The high tempo, garage rock ‘Machine’ is next. Arguably the best song lyrically on the EP, a song that wouldn’t be out of place in a Catfish & The Bottlemen set. ‘Same Old Faces’ follows and lowers the tempo but not the quality. The indie guitar riff is reminiscent of the bands earlier days as well as the likes of Peace and Circa Waves.
The four-piece recently supported Liverpool favourites Cast and their influence can be heard of the closing song, ‘Setting Sun’. The song contains another driving bassline that John Power would be proud of. A coming of age EP if ever there was one.
