Dutch Wine // ‘Goodnight’

Words: Danny Gillies / @danny_gillies

  • ‘Goodnight’ is the third single from Glasgow band Dutch Wine.
  • The new track from the three-piece is out now on Negative Hope Records.
  • FFO: Interpol, DIIV & The Ninth Wave.

They’re still a fresh band on the scene, but Dutch Wine have already made a considerable impact. Despite having no live shows to their name, the band have been supported by BBC Introducing and a number of blogs, as well as being touted as one of the top artists to look out for in 2021 by Spotlight Music UK. Dutch Wine are known for their moody and atmospheric tracks that cover a variety of emotion and their latest release does just that.

Intricate guitar lines weave through ‘Goodnight’, supported by Dutch Wine’s aggressive rhythm section. Singer Calvin Smith’s vocals progress from understated at the beginning to furious as the track closes. This transition sums up ‘Goodnight’. The lyrics reflect the feeling of being trapped in a cynical headspace while the rising instrumental mirrors these emotions perfectly. For a track recorded in the front room of a flat, ‘Goodnight’ is a tour de force from the three-piece. If Dutch Wine can produce tracks this confident in their first few months, it’s clear they have a lot more to give. Keep an eye out.
