  • ‘Political Wasteland’ is the latest single by Kent punks Lady Bird.
  • Recorded during the band’s ‘lockdown 1.0 sessions’.
  • FFO: Slaves, Cabbage, Kid Kapichi.

Since forming in 2016, Kent’s 3-piece punk band Lady Bird have drawn critical praise from publications such as DIY, Clash, Gigwise, So Young and the Independent. Their debut EP ‘Social Potions’ was released in 2018 via Girl Fight Records, an independent label founded by their Tunbridge Wells contemporaries Slaves. The group have since followed up with numerous singles, the latest of which, ‘Political Wasteland’, has been released as the trio draw closer to their debut album.

While Lady Bird have stated that ‘Political Wasteland’ will not be included on their first LP, they also claim that “everything you hear…is a taste of what’s to come”. With this in mind we can expect an album that continues the trend of blending punk and rap, as Don Lennols’ vocal style is akin to that of Mike Skinner, accompanied by guitars reminiscent of a ‘London Calling’-era Clash. Fitting, as just as ‘London Calling’ provided a soundtrack to bleak times at the dawn of the 1980s, ‘Political Wasteland’ sounds like Lady Bird are poised to do the same now. ‘Political Wasteland’ is out now via Lady Bird’s own label Purple Stains.
