Hippo Campus // Ride or Die

Words: Gabrielle White / @gabrielleblanche

  • The mid-west indie darlings are back with LP3, released via Grand Jury Music/Fat Possum
  • Ride or Die is irresistibly dance-worthy and brazenly chill
  • FFO: Vampire Weekend, Vista Kicks & Peach Pit

Don’t let their amusing name fool you, Minnesota indie-pop giants Hippo Campus are buoyant, lively and effortlessly cool. Their new track Ride or Die is a dance-fuelled anthem that’s sure to wriggle in your ears long past the first listen.

You can feel the influence of their upbringing; there’s something distinctly sun-soaked and blissfully easy-going about the track. It’s like being in a field with your friends during summer vacation, a drink in your hand and not a care in the world. The mesmeric rhythm laid out by drummer Whistler Allen underscores the entire opening, mirroring something almost primal that you can’t help but move to.

You can catch their performance of Ride or Die on The Late Late Show with James Cordon below, or see them live at one of their European tour dates this month. LP3 is out now.
